History

Fountainstown Pitch & Putt Club was founded in 1936.

  • The Fountainstown club is steeped in history, many people may not be aware that the sport of Pitch and Putt not only originated in Ireland, but it is also as native a sport as the game of hurling.

  • Pitch and Putt not only started in Cork, it actually first began here at Fountainstown Pitch and Putt club in 1936 making it the oldest Pitch and Putt club and course in the world!

Inventors of Pitch and Putt

  • The first President of Pitch and Putt Union W. A. Collins was from Fountainstown, the brainchild behind the game along with the help of a colleague M J (Toey) Hunt. â€‹

  • Mr. Collins was a true visionary and his foresight and inventiveness led to the creation of a formal game, a recreational pastime that brought the seaside community of Fountainstown together.

  • W.A. Collins, also known as "Collie", was married to a Scottish woman, and her father, “Pickman,” had once played a role in planning the course at Portmarnock Golf Club.

Builders of the Course Back in 1936

  • Jimmy Fitzgerald also of Fountainstown helped make history. One of the original builders of the Fountainstown Pitch and Putt course, his legacy still lives on in every swing, every putt, and every blade of grass.

Competitive Legacy

  • In July 1945, nine teams competed for the League Trophy in the first year of the union. Fountainstown, Altona "A", Altona "B", Millfield, Woodvale, Sundays Well Tennis Club, Douglas Road Golfers, Marina and Bankers.

Ballet

In 1939, a prima ballerina’s footsteps brushed shoulders with Fountainstown’s historic greens, and both rose together in quiet elegance turning our seaside course into a world stage. â€‹

  • Alicia Markova, the world’s first British prima ballerina assoluta graced these very grounds at Fountainstown’s Pitch and Putt course.

  • Formerly Lilian Alice Marks with Irish roots and family in Crosshaven, she was a pioneer in the world of dance, just as Fountainstown was pioneering a brand-new sport.

  • Known for her ethereal grace and role in founding the English National Ballet, Markova danced on the greatest stages in the world. And yet, even she was drawn to the quiet charm of our little club by the sea, daintily making her way across its sea-swept greens.

  • Her visit to the bay of Fountainstown connected two unexpected worlds, global ballet and native Irish sport, reminding us that cultural icons and sporting heritage often meet in the most magical places. It remains one of the most surprising and cherished memories in Fountainstown Community Sports Club’s rich and storied past.
